Steutel (1948) is benoemd tot bijzonder hoogleraar Wijsgerige pedagogiek, in het bijzonder met betrekking tot morele en burgerschapsopvoeding, aan de Faculteit der Maatschappij- en Gedragswetenschappen van de Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA). De leerstoel is ingesteld vanwege de Casimir Stichting.&lt;br&gt;<br /> &lt;br&gt;<br /> Jan Willem Steutel gaat zich bezighouden met onderzoek en onderwijs op het terrein van seksuele ethiek en seksuele opvoeding. Daarbij zal hij aandacht besteden aan de morele beoordeling van seksuele contacten tussen volwassenen en kinderen (pedofilie en incest), seksuele opvoeding gebaseerd op de liberale seksuele ethiek, en de bevoegdheid van de overheid om een liberale seksuele opvoeding in het (bijzonder) onderwijs verplicht te stellen.&lt;br&gt;<br /> &lt;br&gt;<br /> Steutel verricht onderzoek naar aspecten van morele opvoeding, burgerschapsvorming en seksuele opvoeding. Hierin staat allereerst de vraag centraal welke doelen binnen deze drie domeinen richtinggevend zouden moeten zijn. Als mag worden aangenomen dat deze opvoedingsdoelen kunnen worden begrepen in termen van deugden, wat zijn dan deze deugden, wat zijn hun componenten en hoe kan de cultivering ervan worden gerechtvaardigd? Daarnaast is het onderzoek gericht op de vraag naar het recht van de overheid om sturend op te treden in deze drie domeinen van opvoeden.
