Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band] ademt eerder opluchting over nieuw-verworven vrijheid. De familie was een haard van repressie, weglopen een vorm van ontsnapping. Tegenover de ouderlijke en kleinburgerlijke hypocrisie ('<i>We gave her everything money could buy</i>') staat de ware vreugde van het nieuwe, ongebonden leven: '<i>Fun is the one thing that money can't buy</i>'. Het refrein wrijft dat de achterblijvende ouders nog eens ironisch in: <i>'She's leaving home bye bye</i>.'<br><br />

Een halve eeuw later is dat wrede triomfalisme bijna ondenkbaar geworden. Misschien omdat het gezinsleven voor pubers intussen een stuk permissiever is geworden - al moet je je niet verkijken op de nieuwe taboes die voor de oude in de plaats gekomen zijn. Seks op jonge leeftijd staat al snel in de geur van pedofilie, meer dan vóór de wilde jaren zestig. En jeugdige vrijbuiterij, onttrokken aan ouderlijke controle, is dankzij het mobieltje en de sociale media vrijwel onmogelijk geworden. Komt het toch zo ver, dan slaat de paniek toe en worden alarmcentrales gemobiliseerd.<br><br />
