These 'defenders', who deny Michael's sexual attraction to boys, are not really standing up for him at all. Quite the opposite, they want to erase his sexual identity. They try to blot out the evidence of his love life because it conflicts with their preferred fantasy that Michael was 'pure'. like one of those ascetic saints of the early Christian church, or even the Virgin Mary.
