This time it's U.S. author Wendy Doniger's 2009 book "The Hindus: An Alternative History," which will no longer be available to customers in the world's largest democracy. After a 2011 civil lawsuit was filed against publishing house Penguin, the company this week settled the case against it when it agreed to stop selling the title in India, and promised to destroy any copies still in its possession in the country. The book's critics said it had several unforgivable indiscretions: it purportedly claimed that Mahatma Gandi slept in the same bed as young girls, that Swami Vivekananda, a 19th-century Indian Hindu monk, advised people to eat beef, and that Laxmi Bail, a onetime queen of an Indian princely state, was actually loyal to the British during the first war of India's independence in 1857.
