In 2008, Denise Harvey was sentenced to 30 years in prison for having sex with a minor. She was 38 at the time (the five incidents took place in 2006), and the boy was 16. Reaction to the 30-year sentence was widespread disbelief. Circuit Judge Dan Vaughn's punishment was considered exceedingly harsh. However, Vaughn had to follow the state's strict sentencing guidelines. [...] Florida is one of only nine states in the county where the age of consent is 18. In 34 states, including neighboring Georgia and Alabama, the age of consent is 16. [...] It simply defies logic for Harvey to be sentenced to 30 years in Florida, yet what she did wouldn't even have been a crime in 34 states.
