The relationships exposed by the latest crop of clerical sex scandals seem very similar to those pursued by other closeted, conflicted boy-lovers. Though not forced, the liaisons are furtive and brief. Somewhat mutual, they also rely on the authority of the adult to absolve the guilt the Church attaches to sexual relationships, rather than inviting the younger partner to confront for himself the notion that sex is sinful.
